It’s been a month since a highly contagious mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus discovered in the U.K. made its way to the U.S. Since then, the variant has spread to at least 28 states, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicting that it will likely become the dominant strain in the U.S. by March. But besides being more transmissible, a new study has found that the U.K. COVID strain is also different in which symptoms it presents with. Read on to see what researchers found about the U.K. variant, and for more on how you can keep yourself safe, check out Stop Doing This Immediately to Avoid the New COVID Strain, Doctor Warns.

A new study from the U.K. government’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) analyzed the symptoms of a random sample of 6,000 patients in England who tested positive for the coronavirus between mid-November and mid-January, the BBC reports. Test results showed that the 3,500 patients who tested positive for the new U.K variant were more likely to experience four symptoms in particular when compared with the 2,500 who were found to be infected by other variants.

Experts believe that mutations in the shape of SARS-CoV-2 are what’s causing the sudden change in how the illness is exhibited. “Some of these changes in different parts of the virus could affect the body’s immune response and also influence the range of symptoms associated with infection,” Lawrence Young, PhD, virologist and professor of molecular oncology at the University of Warwick in the U.K., told the BBC.

So, which symptoms are you more likely to experience with the new U.K. variant? Read on to see what the study found, and for more on what could help you if you come down with the virus, find out which Over-the-Counter Medication Can Kill COVID, Study Says.
