Starting Friday, the health department will add individuals ages 50-64 who meet the Pennsylvania 1A criteria.

The Allegheny County Health Department is expanding COVID-19 vaccine eligibility requirements starting Friday. Starting Friday, the health department will add individuals ages 50-64 who meet the Pennsylvania 1A criteria. Conditions that qualify someone for 1A include cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, down syndrome, heart conditions, immunocompromise, obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease, type 2 diabetes and smoking.Click here to read the latest information about the health department’s vaccine clinics. The announcement was made during the county’s weekly coronavirus news briefing on Wednesday. During the news briefing, Health Department Director Dr. Debra Bogen said she is concerned about a possible spring surge in cases, especially with the COVID-19 variants. Bogen said that means one person can spread the virus to more people than with the main strand. She also said she is seeing more cases linked to group events and she’s looking ahead to when some restrictions will be loosened in Pennsylvania on April 4. The county announced Wednesday that 150,000 residents in the county are fully vaccinated and hospitalizations and deaths continue to decline.
